Bana Pele Publications
Privacy policy
Last updated 18 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information Bana Pele collects when you read Sandpit, the Shared Blueprint and the Bana Pele Charter on publications.banapele.org, why, how it is protected, and your rights under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Who we are
Bana Pele (“children first”) is a movement that unites government, business, civil society, practitioners, families and communities to make affordable, quality early learning available to every child in South Africa. Bana Pele Publications is where the movement publishes its magazine and documents. “We” and “us” mean Bana Pele and its Secretariat.
The short version
You can read everything here without telling us who you are. The site has no accounts, no forms and no newsletter sign-up. It uses Google Analytics cookies to understand how it is read, and you can say no to them. We never sell your information.
What we collect
- How the site is used (analytics cookies). We use Google Analytics to see, in aggregate, which pages are read, how long for, what device and browser is used, the approximate location (city or country) and how people found the site. It sets cookies in your browser to do this. Google Analytics does not store your IP address, and we cannot identify you from these reports. We use no advertising cookies and do not share analytics with advertisers.
- Technical information. Our hosting provider briefly processes your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse. We do not use this to identify you.
- If you email us. When you write to admin@banapele.org, we receive your email address and whatever you include, and use it only to reply and follow up on your request.
Who processes it for us
- Cloudflare hosts the site.
- Google provides Google Analytics.
- Microsoft provides the admin@banapele.org mailbox.
- 1Pulse Digital builds and maintains the site for Bana Pele.
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
How long we keep it
- Analytics: Google Analytics keeps visit data for up to 14 months, after which it is deleted automatically.
- Emails: only as long as we need them to deal with your request, or as the law requires.
- Technical logs: kept by our hosting provider only briefly, for security.
Cookies and your choice
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. This site uses only Google Analytics cookies (named _ga and _ga_…, kept for up to 14 months) to count visits. When you first visit, a notice at the foot of the page lets you choose:
- OK keeps analytics on;
- No thanks switches Google Analytics off in your browser for this site.
Your choice is remembered in your browser. To change it later, clear this site’s data in your browser settings and choose again. You can also block cookies, or use Google’s opt-out add-on.
Where your information is kept
The services we use run on servers outside South Africa: Cloudflare (worldwide), Google (mainly in the United States and Europe) and Microsoft. POPIA allows this when the receiving company is bound by protections similar to POPIA’s. Each of these providers processes information only on our behalf, under data processing terms that require them to keep it secure and confidential.
How we keep it safe
The site is served only over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), with security settings that stop other sites from embedding or altering its pages. Access to the information we hold is limited to the people at Bana Pele who need it for the purposes above.
Children
The site is for adults and organisations. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The photographs of children on the site were taken with the consent of their parents or guardians. If you have a concern about a photograph, email us and we will look into it promptly.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you, and for a copy of it;
- ask us to correct, update or delete it;
- object to how we use it, or withdraw your consent, at any time;
- ask us to stop sending you updates about the movement.
To do any of these, email admin@banapele.org. We will reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa).
Information Officer
Questions about this policy, or about how Bana Pele handles personal information, can be sent to our Information Officer at admin@banapele.org.
Links to other sites
Links to other websites, and share buttons that open WhatsApp, LinkedIn or email, take you to services with their own privacy policies. Nothing is sent to them until you choose to share.
Changes to this policy
If what we collect or how we use it changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
